The first on our list is obviously no other than the Netflix true crime documentary The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker. This movie tells the story of the incident in 2013 when a man recounted his story of using a hatchet to save a woman’s life. The man identified himself as Kai and the video of his interview became viral and received national attention. The man was later identified as Caleb Lawrence McGillvary from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
In the video, Kai describes how he was picked up by a man named McBride while he was hitchhiking. After a short while, McBride crashes his vehicle into a pedestrian and Kai leaves the car to help said pedestrian.
A woman later arrives on the scene and at this point, McBride leaves the car and attacks the woman in a bear hug. Kai fearing for the woman’s life attacks McBride with a hatchet and saves her. Months later, Kai was arrested for the murder of an attorney named Joseph Galfy.
Poker Face
While the first movie on this list was a mystery movie, the next one is a mystery TV series titled Poker Face. Natasha Lyonne stars as Charlie Cale, a detective who has the ability to identify when someone is lying to her. For every episode, we see Charlie getting in her car and traveling to a new town.
She encounters some trouble and comes across a strange case with new characters. Like any other mystery-loving detective, she investigates and solves the case before moving on to the next town.
The series is a great watch for mystery lovers. The guest cast for the show includes Joseph Gordon-Lewitt, Nick Nolte, Choe Sevigny, Adrien Brody, Hong Chau, and more. The show first premiered on 26th January on Peacock.
Extraordinary
There are plenty of superhero shows for those of you that love watching fantasy shows. In these shows, oftentimes the superhero is the outcast or the unique person there. However, what if we turn things around? What if everyone has powers, except one person? There was an animated movie with a story like that, wasn’t there? It was titled Encanto, but what if there was a real-life TV show of that sort? Extraordinary is that show!
This show is a comedy series that first premiered on January 25 on Hulu. The show focuses on Jen, the only girl without superpowers, and her friends, who are trying to find their purpose. The creators of the show had room for creativity as they could mess around with some superpowers and use them to their advantage. It’s a light-hearted show that just needs to be on your list!
The Last of Us
When video games get movies or TV shows, it’s the best thing ever, don’t you agree? For those of you who do, The Last of Us is adapted from a game of the same name. It was a 2013 PlayStation game – a zombie one! Now, you have a zombie TV show starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie. The two of them are survivors living in a post-apocalyptic America among zombies.
Like in any other zombie show, there’s a way to save humanity and these two survivors have taken it upon themselves to, ultimately, save humanity. This show is undoubtedly one of the best adaptations of a video game yet! While we are unsure whether this will spark a trend of exceptional adaptations or just remain as one of those one-of-a-kind shows, it is still exciting! The show first premiered on January 15 on HBO.
